Why we started WagglyTag

Harvey, the dog who inspired WagglyTag

Harvey - the reason it all began 🐾

WagglyTag started with our own dog, Harvey. We're a camping family, and Harvey comes with us everywhere. He's microchipped, but we kept coming back to the same worry: a chip doesn't help much when you're out in the bush, miles from the nearest vet with a scanner. So we asked ourselves a simple question - how do we give Harvey the best possible chance of finding his way home, wherever we are?

That question became a QR code on his collar. My husband - a camping enthusiast and a bit of an IT boffin - conceptualised the idea and built the whole system, just for our boy. It worked so well that we knew we couldn't keep it to ourselves, so we opened it up to pet owners right across South Africa.

We also built in a referral programme on purpose. Times are tough, and we wanted WagglyTag to be a way for everyday South Africans - and the vets, groomers and pet lovers in our communities - to earn a little extra while helping keep pets safe.

WagglyTag is a South African pet-safety company that designs and sells smart QR-code pet tags built around a single promise: one scan, home again. Every year, countless dogs and cats slip through a gate or bolt at the sound of fireworks, and a frightened animal with no way to identify its owner can be desperately hard to reunite with its family. WagglyTag closes that gap with an affordable, technology-enabled ID tag that turns any stranger with a smartphone into the fastest route home.

At the heart of the product is a durable collar tag printed with a unique QR code. Each code is permanently linked to an online profile for the pet - its name, photo, breed, colour, description, medical conditions, and the owner's emergency contact details. When someone finds a lost pet and scans the tag with an ordinary phone camera, the profile opens instantly in their browser. No app is required, for the finder or the owner, removing the friction that undermines so many "smart" pet products. In the same moment, the owner receives an email alert that includes the finder's message and, where shared, their location plotted on a map - so a reunion can begin within seconds of the tag being scanned.

WagglyTag is offered in a range of playful designs - Classic Wag, Adventure Wag (Small and Large), Doughnut Delux Wag, and Avo Delux Wag - all priced identically so customers choose purely on style. Pricing is structured around how long the tag stays active rather than which design is picked. A new customer pays R299 for one year of cover, R479 for two years, or R629 for three, with longer terms costing less per year. Existing members renew at reduced rates - from R199 per year - rewarding loyalty and encouraging customers to keep their pets protected year after year. Delivery is included across South Africa, and payments are handled securely through PayFast, a locally trusted gateway.

The service is deliberately designed to stay useful for the whole life of the pet. Owners get unlimited profile updates, so a new phone number or a change in medical needs is always current when it matters most. A tag can be reassigned to another pet at any time, and critical medical information is shown to whoever finds the animal, helping a good Samaritan care for it correctly while the owner is contacted. If a pet is recovered, the owner simply resets the tag; if a tag is lost or stolen, it can be deactivated so its QR code stops working. As cover nears its end, WagglyTag sends a reminder two weeks before expiry, and customers can renew while keeping the very same tag and QR code - no need to re-tag the pet or reprint anything. Thoughtful touches like birthday emails add a moment of delight to an otherwise practical purchase.

WagglyTag serves the South African market, where pet ownership is high and the emotional and financial stakes of a lost animal are significant. The company's model is intentionally simple and scalable: tags are produced in batches, held as inventory, and matched to orders at dispatch, giving the business tight control over fulfilment and quality. Because the underlying platform is digital, each physical tag becomes the entry point to an ongoing relationship - renewals, profile management, and repeat purchases - rather than a one-off sale.

Growth is supported by a built-in referral programme that pays partners 10% commission on every sale generated through their link. This opens natural distribution channels through veterinarians, groomers, pet shops, shelters, and everyday animal lovers, aligning WagglyTag's success with the communities that care most about keeping pets safe. It also creates a low-cost, word-of-mouth acquisition engine well suited to a category driven by trust and personal recommendation.

More than a product, WagglyTag positions itself as peace of mind on a collar. The proposition is easy to grasp, priced accessibly, and backed by a genuinely useful experience for both pet owners and the strangers who help bring animals home. By combining a tangible, giftable product with a recurring digital service, the company builds durable customer relationships and predictable renewal revenue while pursuing a mission that resonates deeply with its market: making sure that no pet stays lost for want of a way to say "this is who I belong to."
